Hair Talk Volume IV

Happy New Year! I really do hope all of you are still keeping up with your resolutions. I can totally respect a person evaluating their life and using January 1st as the opportunity to make positive things happen. However, is there ever a "good time" to make changes in your life? I think NOW is the best time. Whether it's October or January. So whether you made resolutions this year or not, I really do hope you are in good spirits and living your best life NOW!

Check out my hair ya'll!

NAIL ART: Pink Raceway

Photobucket

This is one of my favorite designs. I tried to keep this for as long as possible because I got so many compliments on it =]
I used wet and wild #242 for the pink, and I used a thin acrylic brush with black and white acrylic paint for the middle finger

Hair Grease- Friend or Foe?

Photobucket

It was a typical Saturday afternoon, me and a friend were looking for a Baja Fresh in The City (chicken burrito enchilada style, babyyyyyyyyy). My hair was looking super cute, long with a side part, jet black yaki perm texture weave (for beauty supply hair, it has superb blend-ability for straightened natural textures my friends). It was late august and I was struggling to keep my leave out hair as smooth as the weave with a soft boars head brush. Struggle indeed. I was in the mirror every few hours maintaining.

When I got home, I was completely frustrated with the state of my hair, my hair had soaked up the humidity, and was now looking a bit crazy.....I began silently ranting to myself "how can I stop this poofiness without burning the heck out of my hair flat ironing every day?!" "I want my hair to look crisp like I just came from the salon everyday! This is unfair"...... and then, I had an epiphany. Hair grease blocks out moisture.... wonder if it would keep my leave-out hair water proof.....And that's the last time i've ever had a problem with seamlessly blending my natural, flat ironed hair with straight weave,

The things you've heard about mineral oil are true:

"mineral oil will stop your hair from absorbing moisture"

"mineral oil is a cheap filler that will damage your hair strands"

"mineral oil dries our hair out and leaves it brittle."

However it's not what you use, but how you use it. Mineral oil is basically ultra refined petroleum jelly (i.e. - Vaseline). It's derived from the process that gets us the oil we gas up our cars with. This information may make the product seem crude, but you'd be surprised to know where some cosmetic ingredients are derived from.

Mineral oil based products are the ULTIMATE moisture blocker.

The problems come when you leave this stuff in your hair for long periods of time without shampooing. This is where I got into trouble in the past, washing my hair once a month was causing my mineral oil coated hair strands to totally dry out.

I'm not toting mineral oil as a miracle product, but from my experience, if used properly it will help naturals blend their hair with weaves, and makes hair stay straighter longer.

New Hair Style

Photobucket
I'm always thinking of new ways to wear a cute hairstyle and also protect the ends of my hair, the most vital part of hair growth.I have such a small amount of hair left out in this style, that I would consider it a protective style. I maintain my edges and hair thats left out by applying a moisturizing leave-in and hair grease. Yes, hair grease. my next post will be on how to PROPERLY use hair grease. I know mineral oil (the main ingredient in most hair grease) is considered horrible because of its hydro repellant qualities, but we can use this to our advantage in specific situation.

I like to use "yaki perm" hair because it blends SEAMLESSLY with my flat ironed texture. This is a "short" style, so no issues with tangling. I love the bone straight look even though the Kim Kardashian long curls are in right now =]
I'll post more pictures to this once I get the chance, i'm posting from work and internet use is limited!

Nail Art - Randomness

Photobucket

I'm not sure what inspired this. I thought the checkerboard was cool, and out of all the colors I have, this blue is my favorite.

I get my manicures to last a little over a week by applying a thick goopy clear polish over the desgin the first day and the next day I apply a clear coat with a thin cosistency, and then the thick goopy coat the next day...so on and so forth each day after.

Basically I alternate between applying a thick or thin clear coat everyday. My polish use to chip the next day, but this method works. Also, cheap polishes tend to not last very long either. I HATE wet and wild. They never last on me. ANY beauty supply store brand is better then wet and wild. But not above my favorite acrylic paints :0)

Hair Growth Proof

PhotobucketPhotobucket
This is my hair growth after wearing my hair in box braids for 3 months. (Isn't the "up the nose" shot AWESOME?!?!) I have been protective styling now for a loong while, but didn't make any REAL progress until I cut off the majority of my damaged ends and wore a weave all of 2010. (Pics of that to come....)

This progress is small compared to where i'd like to go (mid back length!!) but i'm proud because i'm well on my way and in turn I can share with other brown girls how they can also get the hair of their dreams!

I have a lot of pictures to share, and even more hair care tips. Thanks for reading!

Nail Art - Minnie Mouse is in the House

Photobucket

I wish i'd taken more interest in my artistic side earlier in life. I'd probably have some COOL job right now. Something cool like a photographer who produces videos for local artists. Maybe a graphic designer for local small business'.

Soooo, since I don't do any of that (aside from a little photography and writing here and there....) I choose to direct my capabilities into things like nail art. And hair =]

*Did you know acrylic paint can be used as nail polish? The color variety is much more diverse then regular nail polish, AND most importantly each bottle costs a buck and lasts FOREVER.*

This design was inspired by minnie mouse (yes, i'm always this profound)I have gotten so many compliments on it. I mean, let's be real here, it's downright adorable.

That is all.
More hair talk tomorrow perhaps ♥
